Zinc yellow plating adds a yellow chromate passivation over the zinc layer, giving noticeably better corrosion resistance than blue passivation along with the familiar iridescent gold-yellow finish used across the automotive and engineering industries. It is the preferred choice for chassis hardware, clamps and fasteners exposed to moisture and road conditions.
Why choose this finish
Yellow passivation extends time to white rust compared with blue passivation.
The gold-yellow finish makes plated parts easy to identify on the assembly line.
The passivation film helps protect minor scratches that occur during handling.
A long-established finish for underbody and engine-bay components.
Specifications
Indicative values. Final thickness, passivation and testing requirements are set to your drawing or referenced standard at quotation.
| Base metals | Mild steel, alloy steel, forged and machined steel components |
|---|---|
| Typical thickness | 5 to 12 microns (higher on request, per drawing) |
| Passivation | Yellow chromate over bright zinc |
| Appearance | Iridescent gold-yellow |
| Salt spray guidance | Typically 96 to 120+ hours to white rust (ASTM B117), dependent on thickness and geometry |
| Reference standards | ASTM B633, ISO 2081, IS 1573 or customer specification |

FAQ
Both use the same electroplated zinc layer; the difference is the passivation. Yellow chromate gives a thicker conversion film with better corrosion resistance and a gold-yellow colour, while blue passivation is thinner, more economical and silver-blue in appearance.
Yellow passivated zinc is commonly specified for underbody, chassis and outdoor hardware because of its higher salt spray performance. For the most demanding conditions we can recommend thicker deposits or a lacquer top coat.
Share a reference sample or the specification on your drawing and we will confirm the passivation and thickness needed to match it.
